Sometimes we lose things in our day-to-day life. It happens, we are only human. That’s why it’s important to have a backup plan for if you lose something important, like your garage door remote.

First Things First

If you have an extra remote, you can still use that remote and remain safe by erasing the opener’s memory to ensure the lost remote is locked out. Then you will need to re-program the existing remote(s) and keyless entry (if applicable) by using the instructions in the owner’s manual. It is like if you lose a key to your home, and you have to get the locks changed. If you do happen to find the lost opener, you can reprogram that one too!

Manual Operation

If you don’t have a spare and you still need to get out of your garage, you can try opening the door manually. It’s also helpful to know how to open your garage door manually in case of a power outage.

To do this, you will need to pull the red cord that is hanging from the steel rail that connects the motor to the door. Pull it firmly once to release the door’s locking mechanism. The opener will then make a clicking noise.

Then, walk over to the door and carefully push it upright. Do not try to pull the door using the release cord, it will snap under the load.

Be extra careful when opening the door if you have weak or broken springs, as it has the possibility of falling rapidly. To re-engage the opener, make sure the opener is in the open position and lift the door manually until it clicks back into the carriage.
